Virtual Pint Gets the Point

This week’s Virtual Pint goes to Chapel and his exploration into how ridiculously bad we are at cursor control. Do Not Touch is a ‘crowd sourced music video’. The vid requires visitors to follow basic pointer instructions such as, ‘stay in the green, make a mask,’ and in one rather naughty moment, ‘leave the model naked.’ The challenges are almost as fun as watching the swarm of fools who have failed tremendously before you.

The Virtual Pint is given each week to work that has most captured our attention during the previous seven days.  For crafting such an engaging blend of fun and data, Chapel gets this week’s gold.

Lacoste's Octogenarian Bash

Props to BETC for their work celebrating Lacoste’s 80th birthday. The microsite, Lacoste Celebrating Eighty, is an interactive timeline that uses incredible images to demonstrate the style that Lacoste was stitching during a particular decade. Visitors can stop along the way and elect to drill down into the style of the period, enjoy an interactive diversion or make a purchase. The navigation and attention to detail reflect the crisp quality the Lacoste brand prides itself on and the interactive spots cleverly match the period they are paired with.

This site is fun to explore on both the desktop and iPad II. Congrats to everyone involved in this work and enjoy the coming SOTD.

The Immediacy of Mobile

Props to Creativity Online for their post, HOW DO YOU INTRODUCE A MOBILE-ONLY BANK? WITH A MOBILE ORCHESTRA, OF COURSE.  This fun collaboration between B-Reel and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra resulted in the creation of 227 different interface creations for phones and tablets, which were then played for an unsuspecting audience.

This is a clever demonstration that the immediacy of the computer on your body will continue to exert on the digital.

Xbox One Tests TV Intimacy

Microsoft’s debut of the Xbox One has generated some interesting ripples. After absorbing all the initial reports, the only thing I was sure of was the fact that Microsoft wanted me to have a more intimate relationship with my TV and Call of Duty. Those questions and many more have been answered, thanks to the Verge Staff, through the great post, Xbox One: Microsoft’s new console, Kinect, and a big bet on TV. The post is 24 questions raised during the presentation and followups. A read imparts the impression of a rushed launch, poor decisions and a potential security issue. Thanks to everyone at The Verge for this great work.

Microsoft has been behaving oddly since they moved into mobile ‘catch up’ mode. It feels like this is another move where they just missed a big win. Gamers may respond financially, but I doubt Microsoft is happy with the press. Still, someone had to be the first to paddle this uncharted territory, and for that I applaud the Xbox One development team and the lumps you will take.

The Components of Language

Here’s a thank you to Jongmin Kim for the stunning animation, Project Hangul#1 – The mimetic words of Hangul. A fascinating exploration of the Korean alphabet, it examines how its block structures can be used to write most sounds. The work is an art project that attempts to visually represent onomatopoeic and mimetic words according to their meaning.

This is a fun example of how to slow the web down.

Fun Reporting

The hardest sales pitch in the world is the one where you can both relieve pain and promise a better product. Too good to be true is a scary proposition. CLEMENGER BBDO BRISBANE decided that a heavy dose of funny was what their microsite that supported their Annual Report service needed to smooth that issue. THIS WILL MAKE YOUR YEAR uses sharp graphics and well-crafted copy to illicit subtle guffaws as the story of the familiar pains this kind of internal report often brings. Each laugh ends with a reminder of the firm’s clever alternative. The EXAMPLES section is as impressive as the production values in the initial presentation.

Congrats to everyone involved in this clever broach of a touchy subject and tougher sale.

#SKYREC GAMBIT

Props to Rupal Parekh for her AdAge post, Recording TV Shows With a Tweet. It explores a clever tech advance by Brazil’s AgenciaClick Isobar. The advancement allows subscribers of Satellite provider, Sky, to record shows they cannot watch from a mobile location. What’s unique is the mechanism. After establishing an account, customers retweet @skybrasil tweets about programs they want to record with the hashtag #skyrec. Sky handles the DVR connection at home.

Congrats to everyone involved in this sweet move. The opportunity to increase subscribers and the satisfaction of existing ones is a great win.
